MATCH REPORT

With Austria beating Australia 9-2 earlier today, Singapore had to win by 11 goals to enter the semi-finals or by 4 goals to get 3rd place in the Group.  Singapore got off to a good start with a powerplay after just 1 minute, and took full advantage by scoring a minute later through Benjamin Quek as he beat Netherlands goalkeeperMaarten Verweij with a shot under the body.  However, goals by the Netherlands in the 4th  (Terry Samwell)and 6th (Guy Teulings) minutes overturned the scores, and T Samwell increased the lead further in the 14th minute for a commanding 3-1 scoreline.  With Singapore goalie Abdul Khalique having conceded these 3 goals, Singapore took a time-out and brought in Rajiv Makalingam in his place.  Singapore managed to reduce the deficit to 2-3 a few seconds before the period break with a goal from Lionel Sing.

Singapore got off to the worst possible start in the 2nd period by conceding a goal after just 9 seconds to T Samwell for his third goal.  Netherlands extended the lead to 5-2 in the 24th minute with Teulings second goal.  In the 33rd minute, Singapore got a freehit in the corner, and off Muhd Shahmeer’s pass, Mohd Hafeez finished in style from an acute angle into the top corner to make it 3-5.  However, Netherlands hit back with 2 goals in the 35th (Joshua Herbst) and 37th (Rob Labruyere) minutes.  Singapore was quick to reply with a goal from Lionel Sing in the 38th minute, but Netherlands restored its 3-goal cushion with a goal from Norry Samwell to enter the period break 8-5 up.

Netherlands changed their goalie to #1 Kristian ten Hof but he was not troubled until the 52nd minute when Singapore raised its hopes with a goal from Benjamin Quek.  As Singapore continued its attempts to fightback, the match was finally killed off in the final one and a half minutes with 3 goals from Netherlands (N Samwell, Labruyere and T Samwell) to put a final scoreline of 11-6 to Netherlands.

With the win, Netherlands took 2nd place in the Group and will meet Estonia in the semi-finals, while Singapore will play either Japan or USA, depending on who finishes 4th in Group 4.
