MATCH REPORT

The battle of the 2 floorball nations from the Asia Pacific started with Australia launching several attacks, but failing to find the net. The intensity of the match was exemplified by the boards toppling over, as the tackles came in thick and fast.  The time-out call by the referee signaled the turnover of attacking play to Singapore as they raided the Australian goal without success, with Australian goalkeeper Andrew Cathie making a good save from Justin Quek as he ran clear on goal.  After a 2 minute penalty incurred by Australian #21 Janne Iivonen, Singapore made use of the man advantage to launch several attacks, the most notable one ended with Cathie making another excellent save from Timothy Quek.  With Australia back to full strength, Singapore goalkeeper Rajiv Makalingam was called into action with 2 good saves, but was helpless during a goalmouth melee as #3 Mark Benfield shot into the net from close range for the opening goal for Australia.  Singapore’s tenacity and hunger meant that they would not take this lying down, and in powerplay, made Australia pay with the equalizing goal from Benjamin Quek to take the teams into the dressing room level at 1-1.

Singapore dominated the opening 8 minutes of the 2nd period but could not convert the many chances, and was made to pay as Australia’s Michael Woods scored against the run of play to lead once again.  Within a minute, Singapore was level again when a long shot by Tan Yiru went into goal in between the legs of Cathie.  Woods scored again in the 32nd minute for a 3-2 lead, but one minute later, Mohd Hafeez equalized after a long shot from Muhd Shahmeer left the ball bouncing in the area with Hafeez quickest to react with a shot into the bottom corner. Singapore then took control of the match, and Hafeez scored his second with a shot high into the corner from an angle in the 33rd minute, and Singapore took this 4-3 lead into the period break.

Singapore made an excellent start to the 3rd period when under immense pressure and extreme confusion, Lionel Sing slotted the ball into the gap for a 5-3 lead.  Timothy Quek was given a 2-minute penalty in the 44th minute, and off the ensuing free hit, Australia pulled a goal back from Anders Bergman with a low hard shot that sped into the corner of the goal to reduce the arrears to 4-5. Benjamin Quek scored his second goal of the match in the 49th minute to regain the 2-goal advantage, and thereafter Singapore continued to dominate the match without further success in front of goal.  In the final minute, Australia stepped up a gear, and scored 4 seconds into powerplay from Anders Bergman to make it a nervous ending for Singapore. As Australia desperately sought the equalizer, they committed too many players on the rink and were penalized 2 minutes, thereby ending their challenge in the final few seconds of the match as Singapore held out for a 6-5 win, the second-ever win in the WFC by the men’s team.
