MATCH REPORT

Singapore’s first choice red FBT jerseys could no longer be worn as several sets as well as all 3 goalkeeper jerseys had been stolen while being dried in the open.  Singapore was now weaing a new Puma set of red jerseys and white shorts specially arranged with the kind compliments of the Swedish Innebandy Federation (SIBF).

Singapore started off again with #22 Rajiv Makalingam in goal, and he was soon called into early action as he made a good save in the 2nd minute.  There was to be no such luck a minute later as Slovenia took a 1-0 lead through G Tomc as he found time and space to shoot.  There was to be no further goals in the 1st period, although both goalkeepers had to make many good saves, in particular Singapore’s Rajiv, as Slovenia continued to pound the Singapore goal.

The 2nd period started badly for Singapore in the very first minute as they were penalized 2 minutes for too many players in the rink.  Benjamin Quek took the bench penalty and it proved to be a blessing in disguise.  With his 2 minutes up, he came onto the court and caused confusion in the Slovenia defensive ranks, enabling his brother Timothy Quek to rob the ball and attack the keeper in a one-on-one situation.  He calmly rounded the keeper and slotted the ball past him for Singapore’s equalizer.  Singapore continued to operate on a counter attack strategy, as the players defended stoutly and broke quickly.  After a freehit situation, Singapore took the lead in the 28th minute when Sim How Chong took a Tan Yiru pass and slammed the ball into the net.  After 34 minutes, Slovenia started to warm up its usual 1st line, which had so far been rested.  Despite immense pressure from Slovenia in the closing stages of the period, Singapore held on to preserve its 2-1 lead, going into the period break.

In the 3rd period, Slovenia showed more urgency and with their strong line in full flow, Singapore was continually subjected to intense pressure.  In the 47th minute, Singapore conceded a penalty shot as Md Hadi Hassan Basri fouled a Slovenian player as they laid siege on the Singapore goal.  Singapore head coach Dennis Lim elected to bring on GK #23 Abdul Khalique for his first taste of action to take on Slovenia dangerman #97 Benjamin Cernela.  He hardly moved as Cernela slotted the ball to his right and in the corner of the goal.  That was Khalique’s only action in the match, as #22 Rajiv came back in for the rest of the match.  It also proved to be the turning point as Slovenia attacked with more confidence and Singapore’s defence looked shaken.  2 quick goals in a 2 minute spell from the 50th minute appeared to drain Singapore’s energy further, but Singapore’s #3 Muhd Shahmeer had other ideas and he pulled a goal back in the 52nd minute to reduce the arrears to 3-4.  Singapore pressed for an equalizer but were foiled in the 55th minute when Timothy Quek was given a 2 minute penalty for roughing.  Slovenia took advantage by scoring another goal in powerplay.  Within 4 seconds of the restart, Slovenia effectively ended Singapore’s hopes with a further goal for a 6-3 lead.  The match ended with excellent saves coming from both goalkeepers, but no further goals.
