MATCH REPORT

This was the match between the 4^th placed teams in Groups 3 & 4 to decide 17^th & 18^th placings in WFC2006.

Singapore went behind early in the 2^nd minute with Urs Meister scoring the opening goal for USA. Mohd Hafeez quickly equalized within 30 seconds as he nicely sidestepped USA goalkeeper Terence Frank and slammed the ball in from an angle. However, the match seemed to run away from Singapore after that with 3 quick goals from 47-year-old Jan-Erik Paris, Florian Schmid and Karl Forare before the 8^th minute. Singapore reacted by taking a time-out and replacing the goalkeeper Rajiv Makalingam with Abdul Khalique. However, Khalique could do nothing to stop Jan-Erik Paris from claiming his second goal in the 11^th minute as he won a challenge and slotted in. In the 17^th minute, Mohd Hafeez scored his second of the match with a low shot on the turn, but USA regained its 4-goal advantage by scoring in the 19^th minute through its captain Daniel Karvik. Singapore took advantage of powerplay by forcing a penalty shot in the final second of the period, which was scored by Timothy Quek as he rounded GK Frank and slotted in from an angle to make the period score 6-3 in USA’s favour.

Singapore started well in the 2^nd period and made it 4-6 with a long shot from Tan Yiru in powerplay. In the final minute of the period, USA made it 7-4 with a goal from Karl Forare, and added another a few seconds from the end in powerplay through Jani Blankenship for a 8-4 lead going into the 3^rd period.

The match once again ran away from Singapore early in the 3^rd period as USA scored 3 goals to make it 11-4 through Daniel Karvik (43^rd), Jani Blankenship (44^th), and Karl Forare (46^th). Ahmad Afzal pulled one back in the 47^th minute as he shot into the roof of the net in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and Benjamin Quek scored another in the 49^th to make it 6-11. USA scored again through Daniel Karvik (51^st) which was replied by Timothy Quek (53^rd). in the 58^th minute, USA scored the final goal of the match through Vince Faso to make the final score 13-7 in USA’s favour and the 17^th placing in WFC2006.
