review
(9 Feb 05)
We have almost reached the halfway stage of the league phase of this year's competition.  With most teams having played 5 of their 11 matches so far, we now have a clearer idea of the standard and quality of the teams and who are likely to qualify for the quarter-final play-offs, and who will want to avoid dropping to Division 2 for the men in the relegation play-offs.  Here, we provide a review of the early part of the season, and forecast how the league phase will turn out.
MEN'S DIVISION 1
Defending champions, Swiss Club Red Flamingoes, are proving that they are still the team to beat.  They are the only team to have a 100% record after 5 matches, including wins in crucial matches against top opposition in Nhac Tre No.1, Moosemen and Millennia Skools Innebandy.  Nhac Tre No.1 have also impressed.  Their only defeat was to the Flamingoes, but this was not really reflective of their potential as they were missing their 2 key players, Niclas Erlandson and Kristian Olsson in this clash.  Their 55 goals this year is the league best.  Moosemen have scored 42, and they are the frontrunners in the Western Conference.  Their strongest rivals seem to be the impressive Tazsilian Piranha, but Moosemen have the edge after beating the Piranhas in their clash.  NUS Nemesis are also in the running.  It will be an interesting last match for the league phase when both NUS Nemesis and Tazsilian Piranha meet on 20 Mar.  Last year's  Millennia Skools Innebandy are fighting hard for the other quarter-final playoff spot with Millennia Skools OSB.  They too meet on the last day of the league on a very decisive day.  NTU Hurricanes seem to be out of the running and look set for the relegation playoff clash.  Back to the Eastern Conference, the potential quarter-finalists seem to be clearer.  Besides the top 2 of the Flamingoes and Nhac Tre No.1, Millennia Skools Floorball and Pasirian Floorball seem to have the advantage for the other 2 slots.  NUS Saints and Tazsilian Arowana both seem to be out of the running after having lost all their 5 matches so far.
Our tips for the quarter-finals:
Eastern Conference: Swiss Club Red Flamingoes, Nhac Tre No.1, Millennia Skools Floorball & Pasirian Floorball
Western Conference: Moosemen, Tazsilian Piranha, NUS Nemesis & Millennia Skools Innebandy
LADIES' DIVISION
While Moosettesz are running away with the Eastern Conference title, there is a neck-and-neck tussle for the Western Conference title between Millennia Skools OSB Owls and NTU Tempest.  And again by a strange coincidence, the 2 teams clash on the last weekend of the league phase on 19 Mar in what will probably be the Conference decider.  NTU Tempest have been the surprise package this season, although they have yet to play any of the top teams.  Their first big clash will be their next match on 12 Feb when they take on NUS Titans, who have disapponted this season so far with 3 defeats - to Moosettesz, Owls and Swiss Club Pink Flamingoes.  Failure to beat NTU Tempest will end their slim chances for the Conference title.  It looks as if they will have to settle for 3rd spot in the Conference, while FC Squirrettes will probably take the 4th spot.  Pink Flamingoes' only win so far was their shock 3-2 win over NUS Titans, and they seem out of it, with RP Adroits also having more of  a learning experience in their debut season.  NUS Titans should not despair however, as 3rd spot should not put fear in them for their quarter-final clash as the much weaker Eastern Conference opposition should not worry them too much.  They face a potential quarter-final clash against NUS Jupitans, who look likely to finish runners-up to Moosettesz.  Jupitans' closest challengers are Pasirian Floorball Ladies, and the 2 teams drew 2-2 in their clash on 6 Feb, so it will be an interesting run-in to the end of the league.  The 4th spot look to be a straight fight between Singapore Management University and Millennia Skools Floorball Youth, who drew their match.  The key match that could decide this could be SMU's clash with Pink Flamingoes on 27 Feb, with MS Floorball Youth already having beaten the Flamingoes.  Failure by SMU to beat the Flamingoes would leave MS Floorball Youth in the driving seat for that 4th spot.
Our tips for the quarter-finals:
Eastern Conference: Moosettesz, NUS Jupitans, Pasirian Floorball Ladies & Millenna Skools Floorball Youth
Western Conference: Millennia Skools OSB Owls, NTU Tempest, NUS Titans & FC Squirrettes
