| After the first 4 rounds of matches in the Men's Division 1 and the first 2 rounds in the Ladies' Division 1, we have seen enough of the teams to have a better idea of what lies ahead for the rest of the season. And as we take this one week break for the Lunar New Year holidays before the venue switch to Jurong West Sports Complex (Sports Hall, Level 3), it is timely to do a review of the teams. MEN'S DIVISION 1 The pacesetters in Men's Division 1 are the 4 teams still with a maximum 12 points from the first 4 rounds of matches, namely Skools Innebandy, Z-Athletica Red Flamingoes, Merahans and Moosemen. Based on their performances so far, the title seems to be a two-way fight between Skools Innebandy and ZARF, who have the better all-round team in both defence and attack. Merahans have been impressive in attack, scoring lots of goals, but have a leaky defence. Moosemen have problems scoring goals to defend their title, and their defence has yet to be tested against any of the stronger teams. The first weekend after the holiday break will see the first clash among the 4 big guns, with Moosemen taking on Merahans in the first ever floorball match at Jurong West Sports Complex; and what a first match it promises to be. It will also showcase which team will still remain in the running for the title. Moosemen will then take on ZARF the following weekend, so it will be an interesting 2 weeks to see Moosemen's credentials. ZARF will also know more about their SFL2008 fate when they take on Skools Innebandy the following weekend, so the next 3 rounds of matches will play a strong part in deciding the direction of the championship. And to make matters interesting, if the title is still up for grabs in the final weekend of the season, Merahans will take on ZARF, while Skools Innebandy will take on Moosemen in the very last match of the season. It could be a real nailbiting finish to the season. My bets for the season finish would be: 1st - Skools Innebandy 2nd - ZARF 3rd - Merahans 4th - Moosemen At the bottom, 3 teams have yet to score a point, namely NUS Saints, Blacks FC and Singapore School Boys. With 2 teams to be relegated, it looks like coming from this group of 3 teams. The first key date in the relegation battle would be 24 Feb when Singapore School Boys take on Blacks FC. The loser of this match will be consigned to a bleak future. For NUS Saints, their first match against their relegation rivals, and probably their first realistic chance for their first points of the season, will be on 9 Mar against Singapore School Boys, to be followed the next weekend with a clash against Blacks FC. Based on actual performances so far, the likely positions at the end of the season are: 10th - Blacks FC 11th - NUS Saints 12th - Singapore School Boys The other teams will be scrapping in mid-table, with Pasirian Hitmen likely to finish the top of the second heap, and RP Salibandy and NTU Hurricanes safe from the relegation mire. NUS Nemesis and Nhac Tre will just play out the season and hope for a better SFL2009. LADIES' DIVISION 1 The Ladies' Division 1 would appear to be a straight fight between defending champions LMFC2011 and Skools OSB Owls. NUS Titans probably blew away their title chances with their opening weekend loss to Pasrian Scheqaz. Of the 2 frontrunners, LMFC2011 have hardly been impressive. Skools OSB Owls have also not been taking their many scoring chances and could pay the price against stronger teams. The clash between the top 2 is on 16 Mar. NUS Titans could still have a big say in the title race as they play LMFC2011 on the final day of the season. My tips for the top 3 are: 1st - Skools OSB Owls 2nd - NUS Titans 3rd - LMFC2011 At the bottom of the table, FC Squirrettes will be struggling to keep up with the rest of the teams. They have already lost to newcomers Singapore School Girls. Other struggling teams will be NTU Tempest and NUS Jupitans, who are both not as strong as last year by quite a distance. My guesses for the bottom 4 are: 7th - NUS Jupitans 8th - NTU Tempest 9th - Singapore School Girls 10th - FC Squirrettes Of the other teams, Pasirian Scheqaz's capture of Angela Model's undoubted talents have strengthened the team, but against the stronger teams, they may need to cut down to 2 lines at some points with teammates able to finish off Angela's constant feedings, if they hope to emerge victorious. She cannot do it on her own. Z-Athletica Pink Flamingoes have impressed somewhat, but they are unlikely to mount much of a challenge as many players will probably be missing on various weekends with their hockey commitments. Skools OSB Youth have amassed experience over the years and a few new players to prop up their challenge to be a comfortable mid-table team, instead of worrying about relegation. It should be an interesting season to come and for supporters to follow. The new Jurong West Sports Hall has a seating gallery and a spacious side, so supporters should be quite comfortable watching the matches. So other than the inconvenience of getting there, the new venue promises to be conducive to building the right floorball spirit. So head your way down to Jurong West for the weekends, and watch and learn from the best in Singapore! |
